NEMO: NONPOINT EDUCATION FOR MUNICIPAL
OFFICIALS
Environmental Research and Service worked with
the SC Sea Grant Consortium and the USC Earth Science and Resources
Institute on a statewide program designed to educate local officials
about non-point source pollution, and the relationship between water
quality and land use. The
Nonpoint Education for Municipal Officials (NEMO) program was a
three-year project that focused its efforts in four watersheds in
South Carolina: The Pee Dee, The Catawba, the Saluda, and the
Seneca/Lake Keowee watersheds.
NEMO project staff coordinated educational
workshops in counties within each watershed, and provided follow up
technical assistance activities to help communities develop
strategies to address water quality problems associated with
nonpoint source pollution. The SC NEMO Program was funded through the US Environmental
Protection Agency Section 319 funds, administered through the SC
Department of Health and Environmental Control, and additionally
through the South Carolina Hazardous Waste Management Research Fund.
